Successes and failures with orthodontic mini-screws: a retrospective clinical study of 95 mini-screw implantations

چکیده

The use of mini-screws has increased broadly over the last ten years. Effectively, these implantable devices, greatly reduced in size and easy to set in place and to remove, have provided orthodontists with a low cost means of reinforcing anchorage for a pre-determined period of time. However, their success rate is far from satisfactory compared to the well-established implants used for tooth replacement or for other sources of skeletal anchorage. In a recent meta-analysis Schätzle reported a failure rate of 16.4% for mini-screws as opposed to 10.5% for palatal implants and only 7.3% for mini-plates. The Faculty of Dental Surgery, Paris 7, determined, accordingly, that there was need for a retrospective study on the use of mini-screws. Beyond a simple calculation of the failure rate, we felt it was especially important for us to try to gain an understanding of the most dangerous risks so that they could be avoided in the future.

Thread Pitch Variant in Orthodontic Mini-screws: A 3-D Finite Element Analysis

Orthodontic miniscrews are widely used as temporary anchorage devices to facilitate orthodontic movements. Miniscrew loosening is a common problem, which usually occurs during the first two weeks of treatment. Macrodesign can affect the stability of a miniscrew by changing its diameter, length, thread pitch, thread shape, tapering angle and so on. In this study, a 3-D finite element analysis wa...

Comparison of success rates of orthodontic mini-screws by the insertion method

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the success rates of the manual and motor-driven mini-screw insertion methods according to age, gender, length of mini-screws, and insertion sites. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 429 orthodontic mini-screw placements in 286 patients (102 in men and 327 in women) between 2005 and 2010 at private practice. Age, gender, mini-screw length, and i...

Use of palatally inserted mini-screw for upper molar distalization: A case series

Abstract Reports have shown that molars can be distalized successfully with virtually no orthodontic anchorage loss with an intraosseous anchorage, even with fully erupted second molars. The purpose of this study was evaluating the effects of mini-screws as skeletal anchorage for upper molar distalization. In this case series, three patients needing maxillary first molar distalization,...

The effect of insertion angle on orthodontic mini-screw torque

BACKGROUND Primary stability is an important factor for the clinical success of orthodontic mini-screws. The present study made an attempt to evaluate the effect of insertion angle changes on the maximum insertion and removal torque of orthodontic mini-screws. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this experimental study, 72 mini-screws (Dual Top Anchor System, Jeil, 1.6 mm diameter, 8 mm length) were use...

Mini-screw implants (temporary anchorage devices): orthodontic and pre-prosthetic applications.

Mini-screw implants, often referred to as temporary anchorage devices (TADs), have become an accepted component of orthodontic treatment. The comparatively simple technique for the placement of these mini-screws is described with emphasis on the importance of correct site selection as well as an understanding of the possible complications that may arise. The application and description of appli...
